Fiber Artist Sandra Oliver had her first solo show “Patterns” in 1992 at The Art Box in Los Angeles. Since then she has had 15 group and solo shows around the USA, as well as participating in two group exhibitions in Europe, in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
Sandra started out as a weaver and art-quilter, but gradually her work has evolved into a fiber-arts mixed-media style that is wholly original. Engaging in an aesthetic free-play that draws upon color, textural contrasts and reflective elements, Ms. Oliver’s work evokes ancient treasures while exploring contemporary themes.
Ms. Oliver has a BFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the University of Arizona – Tucson and has also studied with Charlotte Buch and Phyllis Giersch. She was awarded a Kresge Fellowship in 1998 and used her resultant studio year to delve into natural dyes and explore metal casting. These explorations led to the “Silk Road Series” inspired by the legendary route of riches from China to the eastern Mediterranean coast.
Sandra continues to experiment with natural fibers and dyes as well as metal, wood and ceramic elements, and her recent travels in Central America have added a new vocabulary of design elements to her palette.
In addition to gallery shows, Sandra opens her studio workshop twice each year for her “Sellabration Open Studio” and is always happy to discuss commissioned works. Sandra can be contacted at sofiberart@gmail.com.
